Some people were born old, so negative and listless…. Those strange children always impassive, while the others scratch their knees by poking into nooks out of curiosity. If you ask them why they’re not playing with their mates, they will look at you, scornfully, and they’ll make up an astonishing answer, cause the truth is they are really clever, almost as if they knew about everything.
And there are some other people who’ve come to an age, but whose eyes have not lost the spark of their youth, specially if they’re full of passion (for anything they may like), that passion they stubbornly refused to give up. Some of them are even able to fall in love again like the very first time.
Every age has some good things, and some things that are not that good. Childhood, a time for innocence, illusion, but also for credulity and defenselessness. Youth, the time of passion and high energy, a time to learn by getting exposed out of parental protection. A time to build ourselves by amending mistakes we made, often because of ignorance (about the ground we step into, or even ourselves and the measure of our own forces). Middle age, some may think this is the beginning of the slope, ailments, and self-denial, cause now I can’t do what I used to do. I prefer to believe that limitations are inside our minds, and there’s always something else to make up for. That is the age of wisdom, acquired experience, balance, and serenity.
I think ages are like rooms we walk through while wandering the path of our lives. All of them have good things, and some things that are not that good. Maybe we should just go through and take all the good they give to us, and be grateful for leaving behind the inconveniences they imply.
“You’ll change when you grow up”- that is something my father used to tell me. I’m all grown now, and I still like the same things I used to enjoy. Sometimes a lack of incentive make us think that we just lost our illusion, but this is because of that unsubstantial society we’ve created (especially in the last few years), which is not very steady, and although it looks like offering everything we want, it appears to be unable to give us what we really need. I’ve realized that if I listen to a song that I loved time ago, (and oh miracle, I still do), that’s enough for me to bring back my highest energy.
The kids we were still keep their illusions hidden in some faintest file inside of our minds. It’s just a question of pulling strings (old or new ones) to get it open, and be glad we don’t need a guard anymore like when we were helpless kids, and enjoy our self control.
Fit in, adjust to new circumstances, and don’t forget about the good things we’ve learnt. It’s a matter of balance. If scientists are right and there’s a possibility (looks like not that far away) for the human beings to come to a very advanced age (some are talking about a 1000 years), then it must be all about a healthy discipline to maintain body and mind, and of course, a state of mind.
All those celebrating their birthdays in January (like yours truly), don’t allow people to fool you. If the mirror gives you a bad look in the morning, it’s much more because of exams, crisis and the period of financial stringency following Christmas spending, than because of the age you have come to.
If someone says you are too old for doing something you may like to do, tell them that you have grown to this point, so you may decide on your own what you can or you don’t want to do.
Bear in mind that the world wouldn’t have moved forward if it weren’t for people who dared doing things that some other people claimed to be impossible. To me, those were really young spirits. Never mind their biological age, what matters is that with their attitude they’ve changed the world.

I still feel 14!
Merce, I love to read your essays. This particular one hit a very strong note with me. I hope to keep wandering on my 'path', picking up only the good from each room. Thanks for sending them my way! :)
Will we be seeing you in October at the Hallowhedon, perhaps?
